Had a 2013 Hi UP since new - 18k on the clock with a Full Service History

Last night the gearbox exploded with part of the casing departing the engine bay along with all of the transmission fluid.

Does anyone know if this is a known VW UP issue ?

Thank you

Ian

UP! gearboxes do have problems but I've never heard of one exploding. The casing is very lightweight so could have been damaged by something heavy being flicked up off the road.

Never heard anything like that before.

Possibly something got flicked up from the road and struck the casing at a very unlucky point?

If the gears were intact and just the casing smashed, then probably debris.

Very very bad luck...

Thank you   The Gearbox specialist that looked at it yesterday was pretty sure it wasnt anything external that caused the issue. Once he's had a good look will report back. Thankfull it happened on a quiet street and not on a motorway !

Looks like you're going to need a new gearbox unfortunately.

I've used this website in the past. With some effort/time you'll find a gearbox cheaper but this is quick and painless.

Replacement gearbox fitted. After some investigation of the removed gearbox it appears that a bearing within the box 'exploded', forcing 5th gear out of the casing. 4 years old and 18k on the clock, so doesnt take a rocket scientist to work out it's a manufacturers fault - Unfortunately out of warranty and I'm rather out of pocket !

Glad you're sorted, even if the wallet has had a "flushing".
Not sure if the UP is the same but Polo gearboxes used to have plastic bearings! Genius plan, probably saved 50p per gearbox for VW and cost their customers hundreds or even thousands.

How dare you write such things about VW?
