No - I just confused things by wrongly thinking it was a ball joint rather than a hub/strut clamp joint.

It seems the hub castings are different; I've just had a look at my car and compared with the one in the video - there's much less purchase-area on my car and, as CSR reports, the location lug on the strut itself limits the depth of engagement of the tool. Hope circumnavigable

I bought a set of 2 and 1 of them did it easily

The spreader bit I ordered from China has arrived and looks as though it should engage OK, will see when I get around to the job. VW manual specifies special tool 3424 but lots of copy parts look similar; I think Screwfix or Toolstation sell a Hilka branded set of two spreader bits which look as though they might do the job.

Anyway, have you had any luck CSR76?
