Hi all, thought I'd introduce my new up! GTI to these pages.

This the second up! GTI I have owned. I ordered my first on the day the books opened back in March 2018, and I finally received the car on the 28th November 2018. I had it just over 30 months, covering just 5040 miles in it. I had recently bought a Porsche Boxster and despite loving the up!, it wasn't getting much use, and with values going through the roof I decided to sell. Sadly I regretted that decision most days.

The car had every option ticked, apart from the Park & Cruise pack and reversing camera.

So fast forward to June this year. I’d had a mixed relationship with the Porsche. Although it had proved to be reliable, it was getting ridiculously expensive to run and a lot of the time I felt that the up! was more fun, more of the time. It was due a service and MOT, so I dropped it off at the local specialist I use, only for them to ring later that day to tell me it needed around £4500 of work. I decided almost immediately that I would move it on and buy another up! GTI, and that is what I did!

The car was registered in April 2021 and was a staff car at Wrexham VW for 1 month. It then went to its second owner who did 9000 miles in it and eventually traded it back to the same dealer, presumably for a tidy profit. I made the trip over to Wales, had a quick drive, then managed to convince them to let me pay for it on my credit card and drive it away that day. The car is in fantastic condition, there really isn’t a mark on it.

I was a bit apprehensive about going to a car that had none of the options my old one had, but I’ve honestly not missed anything. The standard audio is decent, and I actually prefer the analogue HVAC controls to the climate unit, which was always a bit slow. A sunroof would have been nice, but to be honest the one on my old car rattled a lot.

I still think the suspension lets the car down, which was my only real criticism first time round. My old car had the hollow knocking suspension that seemed to plague early cars, and thankfully the new one doesn’t, but it still feels very unsophisticated. It’s something I’ll look at improving in time. Apart from that, I’ve replaced the bulbs with Philips White Vision, and I’ll source a set of TT aluminium pedals, then plan a visit to JBS.

Thanks chaps. One thing I forgot to mention is the tyres. It’s got a Landsail on the offside rear, so presume the previous owner had a puncture, and the fronts are Accelera PHIs which I think the dealer has put on. They’re not great, so I’ll be looking to do what I did with my old one and stick 205/40s on all round.

I’m a complete convert to the colour. I think I dismissed it when the car first came out, thinking it was just another silver (like Reflex), but it’s got a nice warmth to it. Several people have commented on how nice the colour is, and I don’t think people do that for any old silver.

Have VW done something to the horn on the facelift car? Had reason to use it earlier and it definitely sounds bit French...

I look forward to what you think... As someone who loves the standard wheels the Goodyear's appeal to me for being roughly half a kilo lighter than the same size PS5
Will do. I also love the standard wheels, they look so right for the car IMO, though I accept that a smaller, lighter wheel would work wonders for handling and ride.

I get a hint of green (!) from Tungsten Silver occasionally; not sure in what conditions I'm seeing that though. Metallics are odd. Have also recently applied my first ever ceramic coat and am only now learning about waterspotting, not great on black roof.

I do love the tungsten silver GTI, for me any GTI should be white, red or black but I think tungsten also deserves to be included in that when it comes to the Up! Great choice!
Historically the Golf GTI has always been available in red, white, black and silver, so I think all the colours are relevant. I once owned a silver big bumper MK2 GTI.
