Evening All,

Some time since I posted but sadly it appears my Up! is slightly broken

I noticed a strange vibrating noise only when in reverse gear around a week ago and the noise is now persistent. After a whole day in my local VW dealership they said the bracket on the exhaust that holds the heat shield in place has been broken and requires all new heat shields at £253... and this is not able to be a warranty claim.

Just to see if anyone else has had a similar issue as I am hardly a boy racer and dont travel on rough grounds or fast over bumps so am lost as to how this has happened. Does this sum of money sound reasonable for such a small car?!

HELP!!

Thanks

I would not pay a penny. The car is under warranty, part of the car has broken, therefore is covered under warranty.

Unless you have whacked it on a curb or such like (where is the heat shield). But, then I would expect a mark on the heat shield which they could show me, if that was the case,

I am going to contact VW Customer service and see where I get...also looking into local VW specialists as this seems a silly sum of money for such a small car...maybe I am wrong!

Mine broke as well which was also causing a rattle/vibration audible from inside the cabin. My mate just bent it back into shape tightened the bolts up or something and its been ok since. Could have taken it back but now the vibration has gone I'm not too fussed.

Think I have the same problem - a tinny type rattle on start up - only done 1900 miles so would not expect it to be kapput just yet.

Agree with others - no way should you have to pay for this. Write to VW HQ and complain if the dealer wont play ball - they hate it when VW get involved and soon "settle out of court!"

My cover too damaged after the winter. But I go to the dealer and they replace it for Guaranty,He said that this type of guards were defective and there were a lot of cases, but the new one is from other manufacture without deffect so I do not have to worry.

I've just (today) had a new heat shield fitted under warranty. (22k miles and 11 months old) I complained at my 20000 service that there was a rattle going over uneven roads and the tech said the heat shield was loose but unable to be tightened any further, took them a month to get one from vw and fitted it in a couple of hours with a car valet also for my trouble

Top dealer proves why we come back time again!

Ps, car back to flawless!

Well i had no luck with VW Customer Service as they persist to say I have hit something and it has bent a part upwards towards the gear linkage that results in this rattle only in reverse. I will be putting it on a ramp and getting a independent dealer to look at it as i don't have any bumps on my very short commute.

Where is this heat shield located ....
I don't know about the heat shield on my up!, but on my Nissan Qashqai I had a slight problem with the heat shield which was 'sitting on top of' the exhaust system - at the engine end.
I took the car to National Tyre, put it on the lift and watched the guy tug at the 'mat' and reposition the 'mat'. Problem ( = noise on start up) solved.
He said the most likely cause of the heat shield getting dislodged was driving over or into deep/rutted snow tracks. Yes, I could well have done that the previous winter.

Just had my wifes Up in the garage to get them to investigate a noise on tickover which to me sounded exactly like a dry pully belt noise. Heard from outside the drivers door, but all quiet when listening inside the bonnet. It turned out to be the heat shield in slight contact, rubbing on something. The cars only a couple of months old and has never suffered any underbody damage. Cured with a bit of bending of the heat shield.
Just in case anyone else gets the same issue...

I had this problem about 10 months after having my High Up. I took it to my local VW garage who called and said they were unsure what noise I meant so I went it and pointed the noise out (which was just on start up) then put it back up on the ramps whilst I were there then said it was the heatshield brackets. Ordered a new heatshield (took a month) and replaced it under warranty.

Hey,

Did you ever find out another price?

As during the recent bad weather i hit a puddle that was around an inch deep and heard a chilling noise, then on start up hearing this rattling sound.

managed to peer under the car and see my heat shield had torn at the point of the bolts into the heat shield panel.

Surely that couldn't have been fit for purpose if it would break so easily ?

I am having the car looked at tomorrow from the dealership and i have no intention of paying for the repair as i genuinely believe this to be a warranty covered item, the car is only 6 months old...

will keep you posted tomorrow on how it goes with VW.

Noticed at idle this evening it sounds like my heat shield has broken, sounds like a bag of spanners at idle. Will let you know how I get on.

There's been reports about the support braking on the Dutch and German up forums as well.
Some users have seen the start of a crack on theirs - so it's waiting to happen unless it gets cured.

Looks like VW didn't make 'm strong enough.

I had mine fixed FOC in December. Wasn't a heat shield that was making the noise, was a engine mount that needed to be replaced. All sweet as a nut now, they even did the recall while it was in.

Shop around fellaEdited by: Supermegamonkee

I hit a puddle the other week, and bent the heat shield under the car, and ripped the bolts off, when i put it in reverse it made the horrible rattling noise, took it to my dealer yesterday for its 10k service and they fixed it under warranty, no fuss at all as they said it is a known issue with the car.
