There is a black plastic thing beneath the front bumper which is as wide
as the bumper and about 10" deep. It is hanging lose and rubbing on the
ground. What is it? Is it the engine heat shield?

I was warned at service that the heatshield attachment wotsits were worn.

No, just the plastic under tray, there should be fixings at the back of it that may have come adrift.........DONT TRY AND SORT IT ON A JACK....NEED AXEL STANDS OR SIMILAR TO PREVENT CAR DROPPING ON YOUR HEAD!

Sadly it is more than the undertray. The lock carrier (beneath the radiator)and the washer pump need replacing, about £300 in parts including VAT, plus several hours work. I doubt this is something I can do myself, though I may be wrong.

Also the garage has no loan car for 4 weeks, so I'd be driving with no undertray during that time, not sure that is good.

I can't imagine you will have any problem not having an under tray.

Sorted, 3 hours labour, £630 total. Ouch. It could have been worse: broken radiator, break down on a motorway etc.

But the stupid person booked it in as a day job,
rather than a while you wait. So other people took priority over me. Over 5 hours waiting round. So
I won't be going back to that garage.

Isn't it funny how a car is a central part of the modern lifestyle, and costs accordingly.
