I was thinking of getting the oil & filter changed around 1000mls. Did you guys get it done at the main dealer or independent. Maybe this depends on whether your keeping the car long term.

If I remember rightly, there is no need to go to a dealer for oil change at 1000 miles. Probably not really needed at all, but if you like the idea of fresh oil/filter, go to an independent, but be sure to get good-enough oil.

My thoughts were firstly that in the first 1000mls there maybe some detritus built up from a new engine and the running in process. The second thought was that VW (so I believe) use a very thin grade of oil from new.

Nevertheless, it has been while since I drove a new car that said to change oil at 1k miles in the manual or as instructed by a dealer. 1k miles is nothing these days, and the engine is far from 'run in'. I'd stick to whatever the manual says, as going to normal oil at only 1K miles might do more harm than good if indeed the factory oil is truly "thin" (and I'm not sure about that either, maybe it just has more additives)... Might be a different story for Mickeyboy's engine though!

Thanks Steve I will do a bit more research. I guess Youtubers like Volkswizard influence things somewhat. But yes I can be a wee bit OCD.

It was many years ago that an oil change at a 1000 miles was recommended for new cars. In those days cars had a sticker in the rear window saying " running in please pass". ( who remembers that?). I don't think its needed these days with modern engines.

As for main dealer or Indie, i have a service plan with my main dealer. I have found them to be very good ( one of the rare ones ) and i have one more service with them for 2022 as part of the plan. After that in 2023 i will compare prices with the main dealer and "Volksmaster" a VW specialist. They are both close to each other.

I always used an Indie for my Smart. "Mastertech" who were Mercedes and Smart specialists and very good. A service and MOT for £150 and the car ran like new after the service.

I know the last post was 4 months ago, but no harm in another.
I would not be changing oil after 1k miles. Modern day engineering standards and oil technology is far ahead of 40 years ago or more, so waste of money. If the recommended is 10k or 12 months then you may choose to do it sooner, say every 6k. That would be more useful than the first at 1k. Only my opinion.
