stupidly I decided not to buy the keys to remove the head unit on my up! now after reading a few people telling me that a piece of plastic would do the trick I tried it and not only did it not release the head unit, one of them got stuck and after trying to tease it out snapped off inside the hole.
please does anybody know if I can remove the head unit a different way! thanks.

Nope, the tapered keys (or bits of plastic) move the locking mechanism each side which secures the stereo into the metal frame of the dashboard.

If the bit of plastic did not release the lock, and you can't get the correct metal key in there to activate the lock, then the dash is going to have to be stripped to gain access to the locking mechanism from the side of the frame.
