Hi Charlie

Great to hear from you!

Yes I hear you ;)! I saved some money on a building project I'm doing on the house and thought I would tackle the heart of the car...the engine! TBH I am treating this project partly as an R&D project for a business concept so my approach is always going to be different.

Cheers

Put her money into property mate your car will eat it with no returns..

I'm getting on, and have seen money come and go.
The only two things that did me well were property and pensions (well, and a good wife). Money-wise, the first was kind of expected, the second was a bit of a pleasant surprise. And the wife still makes me money by her good sense! Everything else for ordinary people is really a total loss - you just pay for the fun of something; I hate any sales pitch for products that starts "invest in a XXX" and "you deserve it"... It really means 'give us your money', and enjoy the thing until it breaks or is no use, and becomes land-fill!

I'm trying to do both :)
Trust me few do or ever can do…. Example. How many GTI owners are going to rebuild their engines ?
A lot will go for a remap. Some might go for suspension, A few might go for an exhaust..l. Fewer still will do all three…
So many of your mods will see hardly any gains. Your exhaust coatings for example. Those willing to spend want to see quite some results. Results mate that you won’t be able to identify because you haven’t yet fitted any of them and when/if you ever do the results will become terribly confused when you fit them all together.

As I’ve said. I’ve been Into building and modifying for years and never seen anyone buying so much kit without fitting it. Till you fit it you can’t quantify the results.

I have here a memory stick with all my photos that were taken off the defunct image storage site photo bucket. Unfortunately I cannot get the images onto my desk top PC. If I could I could show you the extent I modified and the quality and quantity of the kit I used not to mention the ridiculous amount of money I spent.
I can say without doubt neither I nor the many I knew who threw so much money at our kit made a single penny profit. Our loss account on the other hand would make a donkey cry…..

Would I do it again ? Well not with hindsight obviously. It was fun but very very expensive.

Hi All

I do really appreciate all your comments about being prudent. I am fortunate enough to be financially solvent.

6 years ago I was forced to give up alcohol for very good reasons and I knew that one day I would find something to replace pub going! This UP GTI Project has been partly that thing. I put aside the money I would have spent on drinking into an account for something healthy and beneficial

When mum was alive she needed residential specialist care (dementia). The cost of this was split between myself and my sister. Moving forward I won't have this to pay. Also I was lucky enough to buy a decent property in 2016 which has appreciated in value.

Does anybody have any advice on the cylinder head? From my research, there is a plethora of things that can be done!

Cheers

Micky how we fund our cars is not that different. I’m not a drinker nor ever have been. I’ve been into martial arts since I was 11 and an instructor for 35+ years so I’ve avoided drink as it can bugger us as well as our bank accounts, But I never set an amount aside I may have otherwise pi$$ed up the wall…

Most of us have a property…..l So we likely have a nice chunk in that but unless we downsize or equity release will we ever get to spend it ?

My point is I’ve wasted a massive amount on cars bikes me skis kart racing powerboats I’ve pretty much had a go at most things with an engine. It’s none of my business and I’m not concerned but I still question throwing large amounts of money at something that just can’t offer any remote chance of a return. It’s your coin mate not mine. Enjoy as you see fit….. There is a way of making a small fortune out of tuning and racing cars though…. Start with a big one 👍👍

Glad to see you've sold the Dacia and the monster build is back on Micky! Not everything we do in life is rational but if it brings you some pleasure go for it 😎👍

Your Martial Arts career sounds awesome o_O I hope I never say anything to you that deserves physical retribution😬

Primarily I am doing this project for the pleasure and mental well-being it brings and also because I've worked out I can get the co-op in 13.4 seconds when I am running low on milk and they close in 1 minute 😱

I would be interested to explore creating a prototype / template as such for a track day car. MRD can supply me with certain parts and I am exploring / purchasing the rest. Unlike the MRD cars I don't have to comply with FIA regulations.

I am probably biased but if I was at a track day and could choose between some of the typical Supercars and my version of an UP GTI I would go with the UP.

As more people buy EV's I think that Track Days with petrol driven cars may become more popular......if only for the nostalgia...😟

Cheers

What's the point of spending money on upgraded pistons and con rods when the stock forged pistons can already achieve over this number?

Firstly, don't you think its strange that VW put a piston in a car that has 115 HP but is probably capable of handling 250 HP?

We all know that a piston and rod have to be heavier to handle greater amounts of HP. By sheer logic, my piston and rod will be significantly lighter than OEM and that makes for a more revving faster acceleration car.

Also, by having a more efficient piston (gas ports etc) it will take less boost to make the same power which equates to less wear and stress which means a longer lasting engine (I am having the reciprocating parts balanced).

BTW I am looking forward to receiving the front grill which I ordered from your company.

You can always get lighter and stronger, and better matched / balanced parts than stock.

I imagine VW accountants force the engineers to make cost-effective parts, and possibly only needing to be good for say 100K miles, on average in a stock engine - it's how everything is done in mass manufacturing; a lot of effort is put into calculating the statistics.

Steve

I would also like to add that to create the piston/rod from scratch I have had to source an engine block, 3 OEM con rods. a cylinder head, a OEM piston, a head gasket and a crankshaft to ensure that all the measurements are correct.

This now means that the 1.0L TSI engine community can buy an aftermarket performance piston off the shelf. Also they can dial up or down the BHP target and have particular features on the pistons as required.

Cheers

An eye to enterprise - we like that!
Having spent a lifetime making things - not cars - I was always super-keen to get pattern parts out to recover the dev and tooling costs (the latter sometimes $100k's), OR get someone else to pay for dev & tools and then sell resulting parts on! (easier with software, but we made a lot of plastic and metal parts too!)

All history now - these days I'm the guy who takes a sharp intake of breath for any wine over £5!

Thanks for that.

I have always been convinced that the Engineering community are more entrepreneurial than they realise :)

I can't see myself recovering the development costs of the piston / rod but it's my way of putting something back into the world........spreading the love 😍
