Its not simply changing to 205 tyres which is recommended, it's changing to a better performing tyre. The stock tyres are shockingly bad for grip (because they are an eco tyre), and the best performance tyre is generally regarded the Michelin Pilotsport 4, which isn't available in the stock 195/40R17 configuration, hence switching to 205/40R17
Changing the exhaust may affect any warranty claim regarding your engine, and fitting spacers may affect any warranty claim regarding wheels bearings, brakes and suspension.
I wouldn't trust VAG UK much...
If they can feasibly blame a mod for being related to a problem, my bet is they probably will. They are not great at admitting to problems with totally stock cars.
Spacers are at least easy to change back to stock....
We have a Miltek Road +resonated and I wouldn’t recommend it. I bought it second hand but effectively new for £140 and I’d have been very disappointed if I’d paid the full price. Horrible drone at 60 in 6th even with a load of additional soundproofing. It does look very well made but I’d either stick with the standard exhaust or get something which doesn’t drone or go the whole hog and accept the full awfulness of a non resonated exhaust in a daily driver. A full set of PS4 s and decent set of shocks with the standard ride height will be the best money spent on one of these oh and not forgetting to change the original headlight bulbs/candles before it starts getting dark.
They seem to be well made and you can even get one with a carbon tip 😍 if you're feeling flush! Milltek seem to live off their name rather than quality these days...
I did the milltek upgrade and love it.
Also got 205 PS4s, they def help.
1 remap will give you boost and VW would never know, recommend Avon Tuning Bristol (who also did my stage 2 inc Forge induction kit)
Don’t forget the inside, I did while car sound proof and full speaker upgrade at Warrington Car Audio, £700, great people and great value AND great performance.
My next mod is upgraded front brakes. Been quoted £500 inc vat for comp pads and discs (drilled/grooves/both) any thoughts Uppers?
£500 sounds like a lot of money for new pads & discs. I'm not a lover of drilled & grooved discs either, been there & done that in the past. Noisy and prone to cracking. Good quality vented discs if you need them & good pads (I use Ferodo DS2500 on both my Alfa Giulia Ti Super Rep, (used on track occasionally), and my '68 Lotus Elan, and they're more than adequate, I can stand them on their nose. DS2500's are (once bedded in), great from cold, they don't have to be hot to work well. I would expect that the pads (they're expensive) at around £100, and the discs will cost you upto half the £500 you've been quoted . Do it yourself and you've saved a lot ! An hour max to change everything. If your discs are still good, leave them on until you need them.. Mine have done 20k and are still like new.
Just checked the Ferodo website and they're not listed, but the Gti may have the same calipers as used on a different VAG model. (Sure I've read that somewhere).
Also Mintex 1144's are good in a similar vein. Choose a high quality pad, not the usual suspects that are about a third of the price of Ferodo. You get what you pay for.
I've read a few more bit's about them, the calipers could be the same as either Golf Mk7, or Polo Gti , not sure which series yet though. Also look at Tarox performance pads, but not EBC...
I drive mine like it's stolen. My mods so far have been Bosch twin aero wipers, a JBS stage 1 map, a pair of Philips Ultinon Pro 9000 LED headlamp bulbs. My experience of the brakes and OEM tyres seem to differ from others, the brakes are totally up to any road use you can throw at them. The tyres, there are better ones for sure and probably none better the the PS4's, however if you have the OEM Efficient Grips, try 28psi in the rear and 32psi in the front.
I forgot, we put the Bosch wipers on very quickly as the original wipers were really crap. The Goodyear’s weren’t too bad until we got the first sidewall egg, never had one of those on any car before. The PS4’s are so much better especially the ride quality.
Agree on the factory supplied tyres. I got 20,000 miles out of them and they are not terrible if you lower the pressures. Non illegal driving and cornering, you won't overcome them easily in the dry. In the wet, yes you can trigger the traction control, but I do that now with expensive sports tyres.
I had a rear puncture at about 20k miles on the factory tyres, so I swapped the other rear out. It had lots of tread left on it, I think because, of the 995 kg, perhaps only 300kg is over the rear axle, so each rear tyre bears 150kg and it would probably do 30,000 miles.
Micky,
I had a look for the ebay advert again the other day but couldnt find it? I thought you must have sold them all? Do you still have them available/know if Quaife will sell them?
It's been said several times on this and other car forums that ECU code or data changes are detectable - I'm not sure why the myth that they are not still persists....
Nor me - I work for a car manufacturer and deal with Powertrain calibrations and ECU tamper proofing. Yes a technician can tell if it has been reflashed.
Here goes, a list of my little "improvements" incase you need some more inspiration and its probably a good time to take stock of what Ive done
Upgraded bulbs all round: Osram/Philips halogen fogs/mains and red interior LEDs (easier on the eyes at night).
Screw and door check covers (upgradehaus)
Lock covers (ditto)
Cigarette lighter fast usb charger with battery indicator.
Change tyres on standard rims to Falken ze310 195/40.
Handbrake cover
Climair Wind deflectors.
Cushion in the gti fabric (was to give lumbar support on long journeys, arrived and was to big so now just kind've floats about the car)
Citigo screenwasher cap (upgradehaus)
Monte Carlo gear gaiter
Bonnet Strut (upgradehaus)
4d Number plate (still not sure)
1 stage paint correction and 3 year ceramic coating.
Carista changes.
Racingline elbow and panel filter.
Automatic headlight switch
Blanking plate on phone holder.
Bilstein B14 coil overs
Audi TT pedals
BCS cat back exhaust... Cannot recomend this enough - lovely sound and their anti-drone component really does the job. Then turn the soundaktor off!
Weighted billet gear knob
Bonnet insulation and weatherproofing (now removed )
Painted rear drums (black)
Autec Wizard alloys (16x7) with Rainsport 5 tyres (205x45)
8" floating Sony head unit with Android Auto.
Forge intake and dump valve.
Disconnect start/stop
leather door handles.
ECS wiper delete plug.
And breath...
My upcoming mods waiting to go on are dynamic wing mirror indicators (from a polo), a rear BAF strut brace (single bar not K) and a pedal box then maybe upgrade the brakes and get it mapped next year but to be honest I'm not unhappy with the standard power just yet so ill only go stage 1 if anything.
Tom
