Is anyone tracking their oil usage? I have put about 4k on my Gti in the last month or so and in that time I have noticed it has gone through a bit of oil. It was at the min level when I checked this week and it was on a half not long after I bought the car 4k ago.

I would be interested to know what other peoples oil usage is like.

Cheers
Tom

Both my Ups! consume very little oil, and the Gti has now done 2421 miles since March, and i have yet to top it up with oil.
I religiously check my oil every week or so, its become a habit, mainly because my friend who lives in Carmarthen, blew the engine on his three year old Golf TDI, simply because he never checked his oli, he ran the engine dry OUCH!!!!!!!!!

One very expensive mistake.

The Move Up, which has just over 6000miles, uses hardly any oil, but i recon its all due to the kind of driving one does on a regular basis.

All my driving involves long journey's, so there is very little stop start mileage, that may or maynot consume more oil.

My Gti has used no oil in 4800 mils since new in June. It's still on the full mark of the dipstick.
If the previous owner didn't extend the engine in it's first 1000,miles or so, then it could be suffering from glazed bores, a common issue in cars that have been treated gently over the initial period.
Modern cars should not be treated like the old days, when tolerances were much wider than they are today with modern very close machining tolerances.
"Glazed bores" means that the piston rings haven't seated properly, vital for minimal oil usage. To seat properly, or "bed in", the engine should be extended via long pulls from low revs in it's first 1000 miles or so. With the Up's exremely high gearing it's easy to do, eg from 1000rpm to 5000 rpm in second gear a good few times will go a long way to ensuring that you don't get glazed cylinder bores.

I always service my car, roughly own the week I purchased it from the dealership, even if the car had been registered a few months before.

All my cars, have even been new factory orders, or pre registered vehicles with delivery miles on them.

I am still waiting for the service reminder to appear on my dashboard on the Move Up, if that is what it's supposed to do.

It was serviced way back in early July, so I know the cars been maintained well, but just imagine if owners wait until the service reminder flashes up on the dash.

Check on your V5 document, to see when the car was first registered, and use that as a guideline.

I don't think mine has used any oil but the dipstick is so hard to read.
Probably stating the obvious, but do you wipe the oil off the dipstick, and then reinsert it to check it with oil on the cleaned dipstick. Sorry, but unless I do that, there is no way I can see the actual reading.

Come on people I’m not a total retard, yes I know how to wipe the dipstick before reinserting.
Sorry, I did not mean to offend, just as I do not know you, it is possible you are as daft as some of the people I know. Haha. But you have now put me right.:smile_big:

Yes, I picked it up on the 28th November last year. To be honest, I’ve not checked the computer, but I received a message from VW in the last few days re. the service (not that it will go to VW), and it would be my preference to have it serviced at 12 month intervals.

No offence taken,it’s just when I remove the dipstick I always get a smear of oil down the length of the dipstick which makes it tricky to get a nice clear reading.

As I said I picked mine up on the 14’ December so no doubt next month I will get a phone call off Liverpool VW asking to book it in for its first service. Will get the ‘droopy’ rear spoiler trim replaced as well.

Thanks for the feedback folks, I will keep an eye on things. It might be that I have taken a couple of dodgy readings so far.

That’s our old car

It didn’t use a drop when we had it, but we never really pushed it.
TBH my missus would have been better with a TSi or a Polo
As the roads round here are awful, the lower spec Polos ride like a magic carpet and she went nowhere near the performance potential of the GTi

Check mine every couple of weeks and its never needed a top up. Had its 1st service at 9k, now done 12k. Maybe there is something to be said for running in after all...

The only oil mines used so far ( 8700 miles) is the bit wiped from the dip stick after it’s weekly check.
Due it first service in 600 miles.
Very happy owner.

Just had a look and the due date is 10 days after I picked it up. Booked it in with my local VW specialist at a cost of £100 inc VAT.
