Anyone know why this may have happened? Cheers KevD

I think it can be caused when the wheels do unexpected things. Snow is a reasonable cause. When the steering controller gets an implausible reading from a sensor, it may cause the warning light to come in, and the system to disable itself for system protection.

It might have logged a fault which can be read but other than that it would be just guess work I would think. Just keep an eye on it and worry if it happens again.

I’ve just had the same problem on the wife’s 2014 VW Up after a couple of days frost, disconnected the battery (after reading this) left for 2 minutes and re-connected. Power Steering working again and the red light is no longer on! Thank you.

A red warning light usually means there has been a failure of a major component in the car and should not be driven, yellow is a warning that there is a fault but it should be taken to the nearest VW dealership asap. At the very least you should all have the cars scanned for any potential faults, I'd hate to hear of anyone having an accident because their steering stopped working.....

I agree, I forgot to mention, my brother in law was with me (he’s a senior mechanic at one of the UK’s biggest VW specialists) so we had already plugged his diagnostic laptop in, the fault code was not very helpful, something about “couldn’t connect to....” apparently this is fairly common with ECU’s, especially in cold, damp conditions and the first step in the garage is to disconnect the power (reboot) and then retest, the system check came back all clear, no fault codes generated.

Am i right in thinking that the ECU in the Up is somewhere tucked up in the front wing?

Could have something to do with the problems in damp/cold conditions.

Yes and no, apparently that can happen but it’s more likely that the motor in the car got a little damp on the plug and the ECU couldn’t find it.
