I have
now completed 2,100 miles in 2 months and below is my initial review of the
car. In my case a Red High UP! http://www.upownersclub.co.uk/forum/got-my-new-high-up_topic756.html
My last 2 cars have
been Fiestas, which I have kept for 2 and 3 years. My motivation for changing
the car was the normal - Time for a change, but with the ever increasing cost
of fuel, I was motivated to reduce the running costs. I do approx. 16,000 miles
each year.
Having waited just over
10 weeks for delivery, I was excited when the day arrived. The car has so far
been everything that I expected, it runs fine, yes it can be noisy at times,
but nothing to worry about. Soundproofing of the rear wheel arches is an
improvement that VW could make and it is more pronounced when it rains, but the
radio easily blocks the noise.
The engine is
surprisingly powerful; I have the 75bhp and find it responds as expected. It doesn't
have the same flexibility as my old Fiesta with regards to speed in 5th gear
and you do need to remember to change down a gear when the revs drop. My
regular commute includes 8 miles on a dual carriageway (A45), 6 miles through
Coventry city centre and 5 miles on the motorway (M42). The Up! takes this in
its stride and returns approx. 54mpg (accurately measured, 60mpg as per the
M&M). I recently undertook a day return to Southampton and the car coped
well, despite the non stop rain and the hills (M42, A34 etc.). The mpg was
similar, I don't know whether I expected more, but I didn't get any.
Most of the time the
car ism used for my daily commute and I am the only passenger. Yesterday was
the 1st time I have been in the car as a rear passenger, but it was fine,
plenty of room. If I was going to have rear passengers regularly, then 5 doors
would be nice, but I never had 5 doors on my Fiestas.
I have cleaned the car
every weekend, since I got the car, it is very easy and quick to clean. I
purchased a life shine kit from eBay for <£16. I was very suspicious, but
checked all the products were sealed and looked genuine. I found it very easy
to apply. When my 17year old daughter smeared make up all over the back seat, I
simply got a damp cloth and wiped it off. I was so impressed with the life shine kit, I
got another for my wife's Zafira.
No review would be
complete without mentioning the maps & more. This is a fantastic piece of
equipment and worth every penny. I enjoy being able to listen to my music,
without carrying a large collection of CD's in the car. I have some issues with
connecting my new Samsung S3 phone, but I can make and receive calls, and it
uses my phone book. The car economy section of M&M is brilliant at making
you aware of the current and average mpg. The blue trainer is something else.
Would I choose a VW Up!
again, definitely yes. It is a great car and uses much less fuel than a fiesta
(I used to average 39mpg). I do miss the quick clear windscreen, but have
discovered that with the heater switch set to windscreen and switching the
aircon on, soon clears the windscreen on my Up!. Next test will be the winter, will the car
hold the road well in cold and frosty conditions, but for now I am one very
happy customer.
