When I picked my Uspy, I too could hear a rough sound when accelerating through the gears.I went back to the dealer and got a mechanic to check there was nothing loose and that is was OK to continue to drive.

They checked it out for me and told me that it is where it is new. Thebeginningof the exhaust is also located just under the the foot well and so will sound rough for a while until it has been broken in according to the mechanic, but apparently they are aware of some issues.

Silencers either work or there are leaks in the connections and there is a fault. The technician is talking rubbish. Take it back and get something done.

Hi, sorry to hear about your gearbox problem, but I bought a new UP White 4 weeks ago and from day 1 it had and still has a gearbox noise. I took it back to the dealer and the mechanic thought that it was exhaust noise, I still insisted that it was transmission noise. anyway they got back to me a week later and they now say that it is known by VW Technical that the car has Gear Cluster Rattle and Rollover, (not sure what this means) apparently all UP's have this problem, we have driven another up with same noise. we are going to a gearbox specialist to get a proffessional opinion on the noise then we will get back on to VW to get the problem sorted out. thanks Polly

Silencersactually take a while to become there most quiet, a brand new silencer (baffle type) will be louder than one that has covered 800 miles or so. A new silencer has clean baffles inside that tend toechosound back. A usedsilencerwill have soot on the baffles that tends to absorb sound much better than new one. There is anoticeable difference in tone.
Aabsorptiontype silence will actually get louder over time, the soot in theexhaustgasses fill in the holes inside the box stopping the sound waves being absorbed by the fibre glass packing. the exhaust on an up has two baffle type silencers so it will getquieterover time.

The noise you are hearing wont be a clutch bearing either, if the noise is only there when your foot is off the clutch then it isdefiantlynot the clutch release bearing. This will only be an apparent problem if your foot is on the clutch.

I'm a bit worried about this. I believe the up! gearbox is a new custom-made unit, as the normal VW units are too big. New things can have teething problems. What are other people's thoughts on this noise, as it's been mentioned by many owners now?

My car seems to have a similar noise when the engine is cold i.e. a rattling sound when you are sitting in neutral, with the engine running. I just assumed that this was a characteristic of this gearbox/engine.

I listened for it this morning after I had travelled to work butthe sound had gone.I sat with the car in neutral for a couple of minutes but all seemed 'normal'. Perhaps the gearbox just needs to heat up...

Edit: I've now covered over 5k miles in the car and the gearbox has been fine. I only hear a slight 'chatter' from the box when the car has just been started and is idling in neutral. There is no noise when the gearbox/engine have warmed up.

Someone on this forum explained that if you stop, then select reverse, you will get a crunching. More expensive gearboxes make sure the gear/shaft has stopped before engaging reverse, the Up doesn't, so you are trying to engage when the gear/shaft is rotating the wrong way. I noticed this once it was pointed out to me, and it explains a lot. I thought it was my fault. I had this with previous cars.

Ive had many new cars.... ALL the cheaper ones have made this gearbox noise at low revs, its nothing to worry about. Dont forget, despite the prices charged for the posher Ups, you still have a sub 8k car underneath and it wont be all quiet like an expensive car.
The rattle at idle, again loads of cars do this. My 2011 Roomster does until clutch is depressed.

I was surprised at the noises these cars make, certainly more vocal than any Ive had but Im not concerned.

I keep reading this, but to be honest my car is super quite, no crunching, nothing. There is a nice little sound noise from the 3cyl when accelerating, and the gearbox is smooth and no sounds what so ever. I got he BMT model, 75ps, and it starts up every time without any weird sounds, when cold it does have a diesel type resonance, but it disappears after a few minutes, but that's with every car really, even expensive ones.

I have no cruching, but there are several whine problems at 50-65 mph. I turned Steve Hackett and Genesis Revisited II up loud.

I quite like the slightly rough sound of the engine/exhaust - I've heard it described as sounding a bit like a 911.
Makes it sound a bit raspy and throaty - quite sporty.

Not so keen on the gearbox - selecting reverse can be difficult. I often have to reselect first, let the clutch out slightly (not enough to go forward), then try again with reverse. Does anyone else have this problem or should I check with the dealer?

I haven't had any issues with reverse. sometimes first can be a bit niggly, but I've had that with all my cars
