Due to a car accident where the fault was 100% the other party we are forced to replace our 8 year old, but perfect Yaris.

Its come down to the Up!... High Up or the Hyundai i10.

i10 75ps
<ul>[*]Very nippy and very smooth very decent acceleration all through the gears[*]Roomy[*]Good quality interior... Hyundai have done a good job[*]Ultra quiet engine[*]Quite high clutch bite.... bit uncomfortable[*]Great price around £9600 for SE[*]Good boot[*]Possible higher road noise on bad road we used...Up was much better[*]5 seats[*]5 year warranty and breakdown
VW Up! High Up 75ps

<ul>[*]Decent performance but seemed to lack the oomph of the i10 especially from 1st to 2nd[*]Roomy enough[*]Top quality interior..typical VW[*]Sat Nav[*]Ultra quiet engine again[*]Fantastic gearbox[*]Wife just got and drove it..everythings in the right place[*]£1k more than i10 but £10.6k from Carfile[*]Slightly smaller boot but OK[*]Only 4 seats[*]3 year warranty
So a difficult choice. Plenty of second hand 2013 High Ups around for around £9.5- £10k but the main question is that the i10 was definitely nippier and the Up struggled a bit in overtaking where the i10 wasn't struggling so much. Road noise was a surprise but on good surfaces both were great. i10 suffered on the poor tarmac we used much more than teh Up

Any thoughts on the above appreciated , especially that performance please. i klnow they are not rockets but the 110 really was a quite a bit nippier

you post this on an Up forum and would like our views.....

I did just look for the popcorn smiley

Had my High Up for a a few days and its fab!

As for performance, its not a problem as there is plenty of power, the gearbox is as sweet as a nut and therefore its a pleasure to blatt throughout the gears. Its plenty fast enough, and thats saying something given that my other car is in the sub 5secs for 0 to 60mph. Lots of Up owners also have performance cars which speaks volumes, as we wouldn't be so keen to praise if they were that slow.....

I know... posting it here.... but the main concern was that difference in "nippyness" as it did puff a bit more than the i10... Suspect its a case of getting used to torque range and gearing for the wife. She is an excellent driver so I trust her views as she will be the one driving it 90% of the time....

I was looking for my first car and the final two were the i10 and the up, I am in the paperwork side of buying an Up! at the moment. I too found the clutch incredibly high on the i10.

The (Up!)sides , and what persuaded me to get the car, were
<ul>[*]Include Satnav/Maps and More[*]Insurance free in first year[*]Comfier seats (albeit for a short journey)[*]Heated seats[*]Cheaper insurance for future years, the insurance was 270 for the i10 vs 230 for the Up! in the first year if there was no included insurance deal[*]I test drove the 1.0 Hyundai and not the 1.2 and I didnt notice too much of a a difference but i found the Up quieter in the cabin
To buy a satnav and insurance would probably equal the cost difference between the top range Hyundai and the High Up, i felt that this meant i could get a car with a superior finish for roughly the same price.

I have the Take Up so only 60ps. Once you have run the engine in, do not be afraid to use the revs, they thrive on it when you need it, or indeed just want to have some fun.

Every one of my friends have been amazed at how " nippy " it is, and of course we all know that they handle motorway well.

Go well.

When i choose mine.. it finally came down to the Cross UP! (i'm in Germany, so this is available here) or the POLO. but i also looked at the i10, Mii, CityGo, Fiesta. Finally settled on the UP.. For less money I got the Cross UP! will all extras, then a middle of the range POLO.. and I think it is far funkier looking than the POLO.. Fiesta handled well, but i found the seats not as comfortable, the Mii and CityGo drove similar to the Cross UP! as being 15mm taller ride hide changes it slightly. Good on the Motorway. i10 i drove had a really high and stiff clutch peddle.. was not impressed. I had a V6 passat 4motion before, and looking for a 2 seater sports for summer weekends out with the wife.. Not decided which yet. but the up is very nippy in city, and good out on the motorway..
But the choice is yours or in most cases the wife... they just give that look.. and you know its not the right choice... LOL
but which ever car you choose(the wife chooses ;) ). I wish you happy motoring.

Whenever people pose the question this one.....or that one......in general most people know what they want to hear. You mentioned the better performance of the Hyundai so go get it. With an up you'll always think it's slower and be irritated by that.

Thanks peeps... all good and valuable tips.

i know what you mean Alan but actually the performance of the Up! was fine but if that was the only deciding factor I agree, the i10 probably wins. But the VW factor, the quality and everything else has the Up! winning. The wife had already dismissed the i10 because of the clutch whilst I was in my study and the fact that the Up just worked and everything was in the right place. But the i10 is a great effort by Hyundai.

So it looks like the High up for us. Just gotta decide on dealer or Drive the Deal or Carfile. Cant see the dealer matching DTD or Carfile but I'll give them the opportunity. Its going to depend on delivery dates as we need stock or close to it car

I like this forum... nice people..... "I'll be back" and let everyone know what we decided as a seller

Do keep us informed, and maybe you ought to change your user name to Schwarzenegger!! Took me ages to get it spelt right.

Don't mind our banter or occasional wooden spoon tactics. All of us " nice people " have a darker side.

Go well.

Hi reading about your choice of vehicle, most of what I have just been reading is about the freebies, insurance etc. At the end of the day it's your choice. I made mine having been driving for many many years, had most makes of cars, my last one being a Audi A1 tdi sport ,two doors. As it was I needed a four door car so my wife and I could fit my granddaughter in and all the toys , pram etc hence the four door .
Having driven the four door Up, I can honestly say what a fantastic car, drives faultless.
Mostly motorway driving, so smooth, also quiet good on fuel ,steering ,gear change , braking ,no problems over large road sleepers .also the main thing was safety.
For such a big car inside and small outside you get value for your money.
What more could you ask for ....Regards Phill

I'm not going to put in my 2 pence worth about which has most power, comfort, etc. but I will say this. The Up! has a VW badge on the front and that alone make you feel good about the car. I know the i10 is a good car as my parents are on their second one but it's still a Hyundai and that's just not a VW.

I looked at all of the superminis I could when I bought mine but I also looked overall costs over the first 3 years, including depreciation, fuel, tax, servicing, insurance. VW have me 3 years free servicing including parts, the mpg is better, there's no tax (I have the 60ps BMT) and the insurance is very minimal. The Citigo was actually the best financially but for the extra few hundred, the VW came with a VW badge on it

Good luck with getting your new motor

Mmmm, looked at the new i10 last week and think its now got the Up on the Up! Plus points, I think the build quality is better, bigger boot, five seater and to top it a heated steering wheel. Downsides, horrible instrument dials and no sunroof option yet, oh one other plus, warranty.

It has some nice touches and the build quality and materials are much better than the old i10. But not quite as good as the Up! IMO. Lovely zippy engine but that high stiff clutch makes it a no no for me as well as increased road noise over the UP! Warranty and 5 seats is good and VW could have added a rear centre belt in the UP! without too much trouble.

But overall the residuale value and overall quality of the UP wins.... its close though. I'll give you that

On the way back from the shops i popped into a Seat dealer and the wife was suitably impressed, after initial horror, at the Mii Toca with its white dash. Nice blue trimmed seats and blue inserts on the steering wheel. But then the guys said its "only" 60ps which as she does a mix of town and dual carriage way driving we had already rejected as an option in the i10 and the Up!. The Sport was OK but again I have read a few reviews that the suspension is a bit hard over bumps and holes. We would have saved nearly £800 for a Mii. Why oh why don't Seat offer both engines in each trim level like VW do ?

But never mind eh.... its back to the High Up! again. Just waiting for prices. Drivethedeal have it at £10,700 so it will be interesting if a dealer can do the same although frankly I don't mind too much if they don't. They are all dealer supplied anyway and delivered to your door

You can't specify engine in the up either. It's the 60 in the take and move and the 75 in the high. My dealer couldn't get near the DTD price either. However i went direct to the DTD dealer because i wanted to part-ex my old up. You'd think that going direct would yield even more savings as the dealer wouldn't have to pay DTD any commission but actually it was slightly more. All good though as they delivered my new car and drove away the trade in.

Thats very true Alan. I've only considered the High Up. The Mii Toca is nice and I know wouldn't disappoint as I say but I wanted the 75ps and as duffstar says above the Up has that badge on the front. I'll give a couple of dealers the chance especially to see if they can throw in some extras like servicing etc. But at the end of the day it comes down to money and I have no illusions about dealer "loyalty"... I'm just a paycheck for them ...

In the small car market it really comes down to just a few of cars to get that quality... all of them VAG IMO

The main reason why we have a Mii rather than a Citigo or Up! was availability. As we mainly do Dual Carriageway & Motorway work we decided on a 75ps rather than the 60ps. The 75ps models are rarer stock than the 60ps.
A new Citigo was going to be a factory order (12 weeks) & the Citigos also only have 2 speakers standard even on top models.
The only Up! we could find in stock was an Up! White, which I liked the look of, but the wife is not a fan of white cars & we both felt the light interior would be harder to keep clean. The cost to change was also £1000 more than to a red Mii Sport (wife's favourite car colour) with optional City Safe so really it was no contest!!! The Mii was in Seat's holding pen so we had the car in just over a week.
