We had a Touran Sport 170 Dsg as the main car for years, with a couple of Sdi Polo's and Tdi/Sdi Fabias on the side.

For the last 2 years we changed to the two extremes going for aT6 Kombi and an Move UP! on the side.

A month or two ago I realised that there's just no need for me to keep the T6, it's only done 2.5k miles in nearly 18 months, going 9 weeks unused and needing jumped 3 times. Including a new battery at less than 2 years old.

So offloaded the T6, only to realise the only think I really used it for (longer and out of town journeys) the 60hp really wasn't cut out for. So with that I got the Gti :)

I started my driving life in a 1984 Vauxhall Nova 1.2L in Carnellian Red. 4 Speed gearbox, beige and brown interior, hammered the life out of it. Sold it 3 years later with SR front end, GTE rear end, GTE steering wheel and clocks, lowered and Cavalier Slab alloys. Miss that car.

Moved on to a 1996 Polo 6N 1.4 CL in Flash Red. What a step-up that was! The car that got me into VW's. Had that 5 years to the day and sold it to a mate who got another 2 years out of it before he traded-up!

Then came the Lupo. A 2003 Lupo GTI. A mate of mine came into work and asked me if I'd seen the Lupo for sale on our forecourt. A walk over was all I needed! I went and got the keys, one test drive later and I was in love! That was in 2004, and I still have her now (albeit with a lot more likes than the 7k I bought her with! More like 176k!)

After almost part-ex'ing the Lupo for a Mk6 Golf GT, then deciding I couldn't sell her, I did need to semi-retire her from daily duties. Again, whilst walking back from the shop one morning, there on the forecourt was a lovely 2012 High Up in reflex silver. They knocked £1k off the asking price for me, and I was the proud owner of Uma.

Forward to February 2019, I was thinking I still had a year to go paying for Uma, only to get a letter from VW saying she was all paid for. So the hunt began. I test drove the 1st Up GTI we got here before it was even registered (on garage plates!) and it was a hoot, reminded me of all the things I loved about the Lupo. My salesman mate said we had a few GTIs coming in for stock, read me out the specs for them, and I settled for who is now Roxi, a 2019 Up GTI in Tornado red, black roof, park and cruise pack, beats, climate control and reverse camera. And since getting her new in April, I've now covered almost 15k miles and loved every mile of them.

Lots too the last being a BMW 330i Msport plus. However the car the Up GTi reminds me of most just getting in it and the size and feel is the Clio 197 Cup - I think it’s the hard plastics and the wider track and the torque - in reality it’s probably very different and that was a hoot of a car, but it’s similar

Interesting posts ! Company cars for 30+yrs, working in the trade, so drove Jaguar's & Range Rovers until I retired, needed to pay my own bills but still have fun, couldn't afford the GTi but I'm loving my TSi

Also have two hobby cars, 1963 Triumph TR4 and a 1970 Triumph 2500 saloon

Wow a Triumph 2500. Manual with overdrive switch on top of the gearstick or Auto.
A great car, my late uncle ran an Inca Yellow Dolomite Sprint.
His was one of the last vehicles, a late 1980 W registered car, and strangely didnot suffer overheating issues.

It was the dreaded rust that killed it, not the temperamental 16v engine

The GTI replaced our GrooveUp directly as a daily school and shopping car for my wife and is replacing my Corrado VR6 and Clio 172 for weekend blasts (if I ever get round to actually selling them!)

An Audi A2 TDi, which racked up over 170,000 miles in my hands before I sold it to another enthusiast who has now taken it to over 200,000.

A candidate for the best car I ever owned. The UGTI has a long way to go and a lot to live up to.

Back in the day I had a black 1.6 petrol sport with a red leather interior I picked up from Leeds Audi, Mine had the earlier smooth inspection hatch which I replaced with a newer slatted one like yours. Lovely car but like my black petrol A4 of the same period it had never ending misfiring and engine management problems which put me off VAG cars for nearly two decades which leaves me pleasantly surprised with the reliability of my GTI so far.
