I've been lurking around the multiple tyre threads for some time. The time is nearly here for me to renew the current tyres with something more comfortable, but not spoiling the handling. I'm potentially looking to replace-
OEM 195/40/R17 Side wall height 78mm
With
PS4 195/45/R17 Side wall height 88mm

As yet I've not seen this done (hence the new thread). To put this into perspective the side wall height on a golf with 18" wheels 90mm, so this isn't so crazy and shouldn't throw the speedo out too much (+2mph @ 70mph). I had considered slightly wider tyres (205/40/R17) on the fronts, but I'm leaning towards keeping them all the same. The PS4 is widely viewed as a comfortable tyre. People have gone with higher profile tires and not had any rubbing, so this shouldn't be a showstopper.

Anyone done this before with this size or tried staggered tyres sizes?

I've still got PS5's on and I'm happy.

But as it's for road use only / the grip levels in this car are so high (coilovers) / never really get chance to drive it properly (mainly town and motorway driving), when I have to change again I will probably prioritise comfort over grip.

If possible I'd have liked a less wide wheel (current 7" wide 17" dia) and skinny tyre to make everything a big more playful 🙂. Other than that it's all really good. I can't quite get my head round the ride improvement, I recon it mostly has to be from the lighter wheels (with the eibach pro st s). Considering the low profile tyres, the ride is now outstanding for a sports car of this size (IMO).

So impressed with the up on these coilovers, I'm putting kw coilovers (what the eibachs utilise) on my T5 van to improve the ride. I was going to go down the koni special active route, but I've changed my mind...based on chating to CRS performance and with the up ride knowledge. It seems kw dampers are very highly rated. If money was no object, kw v3 coilovers would be my bet.
Sorry off topic.... it's not a van forum!

Geoff_UK.....Ride i totally agree 101%, but handling nope! A 195 cover on a 6.5J rim is superior to a 205 on a 6.5J rim. Too much overlap and flex unless you run crazy pressures. I have no experience on UK roads with a Gti,but in Spain on the road and Track i have sampled both.
I'm assuming that you're not talking about the oem efficient grips, but a different 195 tyre?

Thanks AT999. Would you mind telling me how much time do you spend driving on fast A/B roads (non-dual carriageways) cornering at 140-150ks speed?(90mph) I know not so easy in UK due to modern Police speed control methods but here easier. I'm thinking my problem is high speed cornering in long corners which are the norm here.
My tyre wear is low speed bends (sub 60mph) taken quickly. These days I leave the faster bends to others😀

Well it's been a week since I had the new wheels and tyres fitted and thought I'd jot down my thoughts.
Ride - Round town the ride is much better. This is very noticeable especially on speed bumps. So much so I was going quicker and kissing the front spoiler (even with the taller tyre wall hight). The coilovers seem to be working really well with the lighter wheels.
Ride on the motorway. I was running 32/31 PSI and was feeling more small bumps at 70mph ish than previous. I reduced the pressures to 30/29psi and this is now improved. I'd say that at the lower pressures the ride at motorway speeds is similar to before, but larger bumps/cats eyes are smoother. Be aware that this comparison includes a tyre change as well as a wheel change, light wheels are not always better for motorways.

Feel. There's slightly more steering feel in corners, with the addition that you can now feel the application of the breaks more as well. There seems to be more pull on the throttle out of corners too......all very slight differences.
Handling...Can't say as the limits are so high now, feels great, but will take some getting used to. Mid corner bumps are definatly improved.

Disadvantages -
- Some people would want it firmer (not me).
-Even in the wet the speed you can carry in the corners is very high. Will take some adjusting, narrower wheels/tyres probably would have been more appropriate, if such a size had existed.
-The wheels stick out an extra 8mm (+3mm spacer rear), I'm aware of more muck being chucked up.

Hope this helps someone👍

When I first saw the wheels fitted (side view) I thought the same about them looking small, but there is a 3D shape to them that's very nice.

I've just been for a little drive, just a quick spin on new tyres so steady. It's really good now, like a further suspension improvement. In the past I've said that ideally I'd like the pro streets a little softer.....For me it can't be far away from spot on now. Looking forward to more miles!

Cheers Aitch. Also with reference to an old question, there is no rubbing on the Pro st s coilover with the wheel (7j x 17" ET37).
I've not driven much, so if it starts to rub I'll let you know, but seems fine.

When I first saw the wheels fitted I was't sure. I love the Oswalds. But they are growing on me...very quickly as the wheel looks fantastic in the flesh. Just different. The car would probably look better a tad lower and if I decide another colour would suite better then that might happen (colour options were limited and added big bucks).
The ride has been a stepped improvement. I'm delighted, but only been around town for now (on very rough roads).👍

Just an update on the wheels the I ordered. I now have a matching set (remember one was a different shade - replaced). I ordered 4 tyres but blackcircles only sent the garage 2 tyres! 2 more are on the way, so all will be well.(never previously had any issue with blackcircles, always been very good). It's going to be a couple of weeks as I'm busy.

I went for Pilotsport 5. (205 x 40 R17). Visually they look good on the wheel (2 fitted). I know frostiless mentioned that they might look a little stretched on a 7" wide wheel and that's a fair point, but the ps5 has a chuncky sidewall so I've got away with it. The sidewall overhangs the tyre.
I'm looking forward to getting these on, I think this bad Karna is due to me calling the efficient groups "ditchfinders"🤣 - Joke.

Cheers

Your right. Luckily they are repututable companies, so fingers crossed. I'm not sure if they are painted or powder coated either, but I'll just state that it looks like a finishing process has been missed. That way it takes "perception" and colour tolerance out of the equation.
When I do get these wheels on they will be the same width and offset as yours Aitch, so I will tell you with confidence if they rub on the pro st's👍
