It's not standard, so it depends on how the installer wired it in.
There are 2 basic choices, one being to used a 12V feed that is switched with the ignition, such as the 'cigar lighter' socket., the other being on all the time (not sensible).

You'll need to trace the wiring and reconnect it to a switched power feed. Depending on the model of the car play unit,it may also have an "always on" 12V feed, so that you can operate the unit the ignition off, using the unit's own power button, just like with the standard car radio.

 

It’s plugged into the top USB port on the dashboard where the garmin/phone would be attached. It’s a 2017 High Up! if that helps at all.
Is that port one of the ones that’s ’always on’?

That USB-port usually powers down when you lock the car.
Try it while sitting inside - should be within 1-2 minutes… (ignition ‚off‘ - key in your hand 😉)

Sorry I thought your unit was a full replacement for your radio (with amps etc) but it's really just an amazing android tablet-type unit. If the only power for it is via USB, then Dirk is probably right....

Not sure why you were told it would drain the battery though....

If the power comes from your cigarette lighter then that is turned off when you remove the key

 

Sorry jumped in without looking at the rest of the comments, if the car play screen goes off when the key is removed then it's ok to leave it plugged in as it will only use power for it's memory storage just like your radio does.

 

I can confirm that the one I just installed into my 2019 GTI, switches off after around 10 seconds of the car being locked. Mine is powered by the dash mounted USB socket.
