I've been lurking around the multiple tyre threads for some time. The time is nearly here for me to renew the current tyres with something more comfortable, but not spoiling the handling. I'm potentially looking to replace-
OEM 195/40/R17 Side wall height 78mm
With
PS4 195/45/R17 Side wall height 88mm

As yet I've not seen this done (hence the new thread). To put this into perspective the side wall height on a golf with 18" wheels 90mm, so this isn't so crazy and shouldn't throw the speedo out too much (+2mph @ 70mph). I had considered slightly wider tyres (205/40/R17) on the fronts, but I'm leaning towards keeping them all the same. The PS4 is widely viewed as a comfortable tyre. People have gone with higher profile tires and not had any rubbing, so this shouldn't be a showstopper.

Anyone done this before with this size or tried staggered tyres sizes?

I think just to echo what others have said here, 205/40/17 is the most sensible option, many others have done it and all reported great results - although I do think that there's something to be said about not opting for PS4/PS5's on these cars. I'd love to be able to test them against something a bit more upper mid range - I'm thinking RainSports or similar.

I assume the crosscilmate 2's are width 205 x 45. That must be very comfortable. Just a shame the roads aren't in a decent state to start with.

Looking at the 2022 tire test results, the more comfortable tyres loose some free and understeer more. So I guess that is the trade off, but not sure how much of this handling trade off you'd notice in the uk roads between the decent tyres......Whatever I go with I'll update with my thoughts.

195/40 = 78mm We've all felt the Goodyear OE tyres, the problem is the ride they give - is it the profile or is it the tyre?
195/45 = 88mm Haven't seen these used in 17" but some on the 16" wheels thread have used them in 16"
205/40 = 82mm This seems to be the go-to swap size for the OE tyres, is the worst of the ride banished though?
205/45 = 92mm I have these in 16" and feel they do eradicate the worst intrusions but at expense of steering response

You could be on to something, could 195/45 be a comfort-biased compromise in 17" between the two extremes? Or do the 205/40 options remove the worst intrusions as effectively as the 205/45/16 I've tried?

There's a really limited range available too. I generally use Camskills for an idea; bare bones in this size and the PS4s are likely around £150ea fitted! GSD3s are older than the moon. The Hankook K120s look interesting - the previous version K110 (V12 Evo 1) were in-favour as a mid-range tyre on Clio 172/182, had some on mine and they were lovely.

I've had 2 sets of the wider tyres and both were under £400 the 1st set I got around £150 back from the standard tyres if my remember correctly so that set really cost me low £200's.

The PS4's just don't seem to wear out.... I would probably try the Asymmetric 6's next but at this rate the Michelin pilot sport 6 will have been released 🙈🤣

Like many of you I watched the latest Volkswizard video. That car was on 16's (eibach pro st s, like mine) and I did notice a bit of a bump in the ride at one point in the video, I think due to a change in the level of the road.
I think with the limited suspension travel, lightness and SWB there's only so far we can go with comfort on UK roads....even on 16's. On the flip side, it's fantastic in the twistes. Very neutral and lots of fun.
I'm still mulling over what yo do, but from all the views it's clear it will only improve😀

I'm running more or less the identical setup to him in terms of springs and tyre size etc and whilst it is a huge, huge, HUGE improvement over the stock setup, there are still bangs and crashes here and there which even in my previous Golf were apparent. So I think there's only so much you can do to improve the ride comfort in these cars especially with them being such a short wheel base.

I do want to move to a 17x7 setup for the summer months so I'm really curious to know what the ride will be like on that.

Worth waiting for a blackcircles 10% off day.

I watched the Volkswizard video and there is a good chance that most cars would have acted like that on that section of road and he did say how good the damping was and I'm 99% sure that car is not running on the GTi specific version of the Eibach's unless the owner has switched the front springs since the initial install?

I like them but they are very expensive especially if you don't want them in silver and they always look smaller than they are due to the design and the spokes not going all the way to the edge of the rim...

But from a weight and brand point of view they are pretty impressive.

The guy doesn't post on here anymore but he said they were the same item as fitted to the normal Up they later released the GTi specific version with a slightly different product code TSi17 will back me up he has had both versions. I think I had one of the earliest sets and the front springs are stiffer to allow for the wheels and the extra dive from the bigger brakes.

Are you not on GTi specific Eibach's? I am on standard wheels with wider tyres and the ride itself is excellent I think you get the odd noise from the rear....

I have thought about some silent coat on the inside of boot on the wheel wells as if you tap on it towards the back of the car it echoes like mad I wonder if it just acts like an amplifier but the actual ride for coilovers and the height it's running I can't complain about!

I would like to try some lifter 7x17 inch wheels just to know if it has any affect or not?

Sorry yes I am on specific GTI Eibach's. I do get some noises from the rear but I think that's mainly down to the lack of sound proofing. I do wonder if it's the jack etc in the boot moving around within the foam holder. I did think about picking up an actual spare tyre tbh.

I would suspect that if it was a lighter weight tyre then definitely it could help.

I'm very reluctant to touch the exhaust as my Clio 182 has one on it and even though it's one of the more subtle ones it did my head in but sounded epic at 7000rpm 😻.

If I ever had one the resonated Scorpion would be high on my list with the carbon tip...

I would want the car to sound a touch more purposeful but without any drone something that's not always possible 😬
